On a personal note, my Dad developed rapid-onset dementia (it happened right after his booster, sigh). A strict keto diet (we are doing the Bredeson protocol) has been instrumental in halting the decline. Our GP is very supportive. It's worth looking into if you have a loved one with dementia.
Regarding the conflicts which make it impossible for the Ministry of Health to promote actual health, I first learned of this some years ago when I became curious about our problem with childhood obesity. In summary - McDonalds is in charge of looking after our children's health. My notes from the MOH documentation won't fit in a comment box, so I am pasting them as a google doc in case you are interested in see them. I'm sure they will all be very familiar to you! Thanks for another amazing article, Jodi.
Thanks Jodie! I hadn't seen that paper, but it looks like it has spun-off a regular report.
Amongst the key findings from the 2022 report:
- "According to their parents, 98.0% of children were in good health. This high level of good health among children has been stable over the last decade."
- "12.9% of children lived in households where they sometimes or often eat less because of lack of money for food"
Childhood obesity sits at around 12-13% (from a separate Ministry report).
'Good health' is subjective measure reported by parents, but the report refers to it as if it were an objective measure "This high level of good health..." I feel rather cynical for saying this, but 98% is a lovely big number that Ministers could whip out and brandish anytime they needed to avoid admitting to the crappy food environment in which our children are growing up!
N=1 Carnivore WOE here, I'm reversing every ill from years of following a standard diet, nutritional guidelines and the processed food addictions one steak at a time. I've never felt better, my doctor can't quite fathom my improved bloodwork, I keep saying it's ketones. I was diagnosed with a rare cancer, thanks to the surgeon and going carnivorous I've remained in remission. I do enjoy reading your work. Thanks.
Funnily enough, I was diagnosed with breast cancer last week.
My sister suggested I go on a carnivore heavy keto diet, which I have done.
Waiting for the keto flu!
I had no idea cancer feeds off glucose.
I mentioned it to my Dr. and asked if they ever give nutritional advice re cancer. He said no, but if it makes me feel positive go right ahead, it can't hurt 🙄
The confluence of Big Food and Big Pharma makes a pretty formidable enemy to good health!
Best of luck & great attitude! There seems to be a lot of evidence behind keto & it is striking that curious doctors inevitably become outsiders when they pivot to food & nutrition based approaches. So then, for someone like you, it becomes difficult to find a medical specialist who can talk cancer, medical therapies, & nutritional therapies. It’s a double bind & the State has done nothing to alleviate it.
Ten years later, after having read Beard's original 1911 monograph The Enzyme Treatment of Cancer & Its Scientific Basis, as well as the other books Nick Gonzalez published through his New Spring Press imprint, I am even more certain they are right.
Cancer is most likely trophoblastic. In essence during pregnancy from about day 4 to day 56, every woman has "cancer". The development of the embryo, the rapidly dividing cells that invade the uterine wall & create a highly complex network of blood vessels that mediate between the embryo & the mothers body & which eventually turn into the mature placenta, is essentially what cancer is. In Beards day he called them misplaced germ cells. In the modern age, we call them stem cells. At day 56 of pregnancy, those trophoblastic cells receive a signal from the embryonic pancreas, a secretion of enzymes that signal the invasive trophoblastic cells to turn into non-invasive placental cells. It's such a beautiful system that nature provides. Pancreatic enzymes derived from animal sources are what are used in the Gonzalez protocol to essentially treat cancer. However treatment itself, depending on the individuals circumstances is highly complex, & very very difficult. It's not an easy cure. It is also not the only cure, there are many other alternative treatments that work. But you will not find one as thoroughly detailed, scientifically, as Gonzalez did. There was a clinical trial run that attempted to compare the Gonzalez protocol to the best standard of care treatment for pancreatic cancer, but sadly, it was undermined. Nick Gonzalez published a book about it, also available through his New Spring Press publishing imprint.
I highly recommend spending the time to read the books. If more people did, they'd be absolutely furious at what the mainstream medical establishment have done to bury alternative treatments.
Before my 86 yr old father passed from kidney failure, I approached Tauranga Hospital to see if we could obtain dietary advice. As he was not an inpatient, my request was immediately declined. I offered to pay, but still declined. Where are we supposed to go to get dietary advice when kidneys are failing? The GP was a waste of time…

I'm so sorry. Good on you and good on your dad for having an open mind for treatment options. Interesting document! Hope you write it up. I wonder if that 2015 meeting informed this: https://www.health.govt.nz/publication/children-and-young-people-living-well-and-staying-well-new-zealand-childhood-obesity-programme

Around 2014 I stumbled across the book "The Trophoblast & The Origins of Cancer".
